Albert Scarrow was born on 4th May 1890 in Freckenham (Mildenhall Q2-1890 4A:713), son of William and Eliza SCARROW (née DORLING )
1891 census... Aged 11 months, he was at North Street, Freckenham with his father William SCARROW [43] agricultural labourer, his mother Eliza [39] half brother Orbel [13]. All were born in Freckenham. His father's had first married Sarah CLARKE and they had two children Ethel [b 1876] and Orbel {b 1878] Sarah died in Q1-1886. His half sister Ethel was a servant in Woking in 1891 census. 1901 census... Aged 10, he was in Freckenham with his parents, father was now a yardman-cattle- on farm. 1911 census... Aged 20, he was a farm labourer, living with his widowed mother. It appears there had been a sibling that had died. His father died in 1903. In 1915 he married Lily Emma NICHOLAS [13-6-1896], later of Ferry Corner, West Row. Thye had a son, George William Albert on 6-1-1916, on the pension card at Fifty Farm, West Row. |

He enlisted in Newmarket. He died on the terrible first day of the Battle of the Somme, when the British had nearly 20,000 killed in one day. Of the 198 men of the 11th Suffolks who died that day, 153 have no known grave. They had moved to their jumping off point at 5 am from the Becourt Wood towards La Boiselle. The actual assault started at 7:30 am but by 8 am it was virtually all over. Heavy machine gun fire decimated the British troops and during the day more of the wounded out in open ground succumbed. Some did stagger on towards the Germans but were cut down by gunfire and flame throwers. Albert was found, (identified by uniform, boots and title) together with several others, as shown here, and re-interred in 1927 in Serre Road No 2 Cemetery |
